And that's about it - once the tube is firmly secured in the trachea, you will be fully anaesthetised ( I was ready for this by that stage ! ) The operation / surgery can proceed when you are safely intubated, knowing the airway is fully protected, and plenty of oxygen is getting to the lungs and the brain of the patient. You can see that in the monitor below - oxygen saturation is 98%, and the carbon dioxide being removed with each breath confirms the correct placement of the tube ( bottom square wave trace ). These new monitors have greatly improved the safety of anaesthesia over the last 10 - 15 years. |
